Linguistics MLING Project: Jennifer Middendorf

UC Arts Digital Lab Production Coordinator Jennifer Middendorf used data generated by the lab in their MLING  thesis.  Jennifer’s research compared syntactic structures in the spoken language corpus collected by the QuakeBox project with the written language of the Christchurch Press.

Lucy-Jane used digital copies of the Press in the CEISMIC archive to create a database of individual articles, indexed by features such as by-line and which section of the newspaper the article appears in. This database enabled Jennifer to search the articles for the structures they were interested in, and to easily determine where they occur in relation to each other.
